Players Want an Official RuneLite for Mobile — Here’s Why It Matters

Old School RuneScape mobile has come a long way — but for many players, it still feels unfinished.

A recent r/OSRS discussion asking for an official RuneLite-style experience on mobile exploded with hundreds of upvotes, highlighting a growing gap between PC RuneLite users and mobile-only players.

So what’s the issue, and is RuneLite on mobile actually coming?

Why Mobile Players Are Frustrated

RuneLite has become the default way to play OSRS on PC. Plugins like:

  • Tile markers
  • Quest Helper
  • XP trackers
  • NPC indicators
  • Menu entry swapper

…have fundamentally changed how the game is played.

On mobile? None of that exists.

Players describe the mobile experience as:

  • Constant misclicks
  • No visual assistance
  • Difficulty following guides or the wiki
  • Feeling “handicapped” compared to PC players

As one comment put it:

“The only reason I don’t play mobile is how stupid I feel without RuneLite.”

Why Not Just Release RuneLite on Mobile?

This question comes up every time, and the answer is more complicated than it looks.

1️⃣ Jagex Doesn’t Want an Open-Source Mobile Client

RuneLite is open source. While that’s great for community plugins, Jagex has stated it also:

  • Makes cheat plugins easier to create
  • Complicates bot detection
  • Reduces control over the client ecosystem

Adding RuneLite directly to mobile would bring those same issues to the App Store and Google Play.

2️⃣ App Store & Visibility Concerns

Jagex has previously asked RuneLite’s creator not to pursue a mobile client because:

  • It would split downloads between apps
  • Reduce official client visibility
  • Cause confusion for new players

From a business standpoint, this is a real concern.

3️⃣ Mobile Development Has Stalled

Several comments pointed out an uncomfortable truth:

  • The main dev behind OSRS mobile (Mod Gengis) left
  • Mobile-focused features slowed down
  • Plugin discussions went quiet

Even features like HD on mobile and basic plugin support have been delayed repeatedly.

The Direction Jagex Seems to Be Taking

Instead of RuneLite itself, Jagex appears to be building:

A closed-source “RuneLite-like” official client
— for both desktop and mobile.

This means:

  • No open plugin marketplace
  • Only approved, built-in features
  • Gradual rollout of popular RuneLite plugins

Examples already discussed or hinted at:

  • Tile markers
  • Improved UI scaling
  • More visual indicators
  • Plugin-style QoL tools (without scripting access)

In short: RuneLite features, not RuneLite itself.

Will Plugins Actually Come to Mobile?

According to comments referencing patch notes and dev talks:

  • Plugin support on mobile has been acknowledged
  • HD + plugin work was tied to major updates like Sailing
  • No hard timeline has been given

Which has led to the community’s running joke:

“Roadmap: 2045.”

The Real Takeaway

Mobile OSRS isn’t bad — but compared to RuneLite, it feels years behind.

Players aren’t asking for cheats.
They’re asking for:

  • Basic guidance
  • Visual clarity
  • Parity with PC players

Until Jagex delivers a true modern mobile client, this debate isn’t going anywhere.

TL;DR — What Players Actually Want
  • ❌ Not a third-party RuneLite mobile app
  • ✅ An official client with RuneLite-level QoL
  • ✅ Plugins that are approved, safe, and mobile-friendly
  • ⏳ Clear communication and timelines

Until then, mobile players will keep logging in…
and wishing they were on PC.
